She began her career as a fashion model. Richards spent In the the 1990s She appeared in low-budget films, television movies, and guest starred on several television shows. Her first starring role in a wide theatrical release was Starship Troopers in 1997, which was followed by her role in the moderately successful cult film Wild Things in 1998. Richards was subsequently cast in the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough (1999), which had a high box office gross and contributed to her fame. In 2002 She married actor Charlie Sheen. The couple have two daughter. On April 19, 2006, Richards filed for divorce from Sheen claiming he was physically and verbally abusive and threatened to kill her. The divorce got messy when 
Richards alleged that Sheen visited prostitutes and was addicted to gambling, prescription drugs (which he bought over the Internet), and pornography. Richards also alleged that Sheen posted a picture of his erect penis on his online profile of a "sex-search type" website and that he frequently viewed pornography featuring "very young girls." Things got even messier when Denise began dating her best friend's(Heather Locklear) husband Richie Sambora.

Wild Things: A seemingly virtuous high school guidance counselor, Sam Lombardo (Matt Dillon), is accused of raping students Kelly (Denise Richards) and Suzie (Neve Campbell). Ken Bowden(Bill Murray), an oddball attorney, and Detective Ray Duquette (Kevin Bacon) come to Lombardo’s aid, unraveling a much larger blackmail scheme involving some of the town's least 
suspicious residents. WILD THINGS, a veering, breakneck ride, proved surprisingly successful at the box office. It features director John McNaughton’s (HENRY PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER, NORMAL LIFE) best talents: sinuous, layered storytelling, racy cinematography, and shocking plot twists. Richards and Campbell sizzle on the screen as they tease, seduce, and 
entrap. Lying somewhere between black comedy and psycho thriller, WILD THINGS is an unclassifiable, unforgettable original.
